Intervention Update: Tangentyere under attack! Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin has announced that the Commonwealth Government of Australia is going to compulsorily acquire Aboriginal Community Town Camps in the Northern Territory. This will start happening from early August 2009. The main focus so far has been on the Tangentyere Council which is based in Alice Springs. Tangentyere provides services to the 1600 people from most Central Australian tribal groups living on the 18 town camps around the town. Over the years the council has been a spearhead for the establishment of other organisations as the need arose, such as Central Australian Aboriginal Congress (medical services), Central Australian Aboriginal Alcohol Planning Unit (alcohol rehabilitation), Institute for Aboriginal Development (educational institution), Central Australian Aboriginal Legal Aid Service, Yipirinye School (independent Aboriginal school), outstation resource centres and so on. The NT Intervention took out compulsory 5-year leases over the town camps serviced by Tangentyere, along with outstations and other remote communities. The government said it needed powers to build housing quickly but not a single house has been built for Aboriginal people through the Intervention. Communities across the NT have been told that no housing will be built until long-term leases are signed with government. If the government deemed Australia’s street kids extra important, just because they can’t fit in, they too would invent tall stories about hard ships, if it earned them more freedom from responsibility.
It is not because they look like apes. It is because they are spoiled.
They have no pride in achievements, and they don’t care about being educated, or working, or living well, but they can play the system very well.
They are as good at politics as ’special’ mentally deranged street urchins.
Australia has it sweet because we’re isolated – Tyranny of distance. Of course, distance isn’t a factor when your transporting gold or uranium, just when your transporting medical supplies (etc). Nothing will change until EVERYONE knows WHAT is happening and HOW it’s happening.

the Feral Court has issued an injunction preventing the Govt from taking over the town camps. The matter will now proceed to full hearing on August 28-31.
‘Til then, Macklin will have to sit on her hands and pray the penny doesnt drop for the mainstream media on how all this went so pearshaped.

What could they have expected? Unless indigenous peoples become a powerful political and economical force to be reckoned with, these governments are going to keep on doing what they want no matter how many apologies they offer. I guess they’re like warlords: they won’t respect you unless you have a gun pointed at their heads. If it has to get to that point what does that say about these governments?

All our government does is grant rights then limit funding thus setting up a fail situation so they can come back in and steal the land again.
This paternalistic attitude must stop Aboriginal people are fully capable of managing their own affairs.

But a lawyer’s letter sent to Macklin and sighted by The Australian could delay the timetable.The letter informs Macklin that an application has been lodged in the Federal Court seeking an injunction against the takeover on the basis of flaws in the formal notification process. If it succeeds, the injunction could further delay the compulsory acquisition.
But these are all just stalling measures. sigh
August 5th 2009 is the deadline.
Macklin left the door open for Tangentyere Council to accept the $125 million offer to upgrade infrastructure in exchange for a 40 year lease.
She said the forced takeover came after Tangentyere Council did not meet a deadline for agreement on leasing of the camps.
