Freedom and Rights of Australians

During the 1850s people were coming to Australia to search for gold on the goldfields of Victoria and Queensland. A lot of gold-diggers arrived at Australia, that is why the quantity of gold began to decrease, and then government increased its monthly gold tax on the gold-diggers. A sense of fairness began to grow with this event. The Australians understood that the taxes were not fair. As a result all the miners gathered together in the historical protest of Eureka Stockade in 1854.

This protest finished by the victory of government, which dispersed the rebels after the battle. In this battle the rebels flew the flag of Victoria Republic, showing that they did not want to be under control of the government. They wanted to gain political freedom and voice. As a result of this rebel, the government reduced the taxes for gold and introduced the export duty on gold. The miners received the fight of saying and voting. All these changes were the first step of receiving freedom.

Already in 1854 the miners enjoyed the right to vote and could choose the government they wanted, but still women and aboriginals were not given this right. Only after 50 years, in 1908 white women of Australia had the right to vote. But the process of giving full freedom took much time. In general, Australia was only the third country in the world that gave women the right to vote. His was reached because of the cultural push for freedom. As for aborigines, they received the right to vote later; only in 1967 the referendum gave them this right. 90% of Australian electorate voted against the decision of the government to pass the laws concerning aborigines. According to this amendment the population of aborigines was not comprised in general Australian population, as a result it brought the injustice and suffrage for the aborigines.

I have watched several SBS documentaries on the educational system and want to help in any way possible. I know this is a sensitive issue and my knowledge of the history of this topic is not well-rounded, but I would rather my time go to good. I am in Sydney currently with the ability to move, but I want to volunteer for a not for profit organization.
